Live: Hiroshima and Nagasaki Day

ICAN will be working with the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and ICAN's japanese partner Peace Boat to bring you live-access to commemoration events for the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6th and 9th respectively.

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony - 11:00 JST

The City of Nagasaki will be streaming the Ceremony in Japanese and English to Youtube.

 

Nagasaki Day: ICAN & Peace Boat Instagram Live - 09:30 CEST

Join ICAN's Executive Director Beatrice Fihn for a live conversation on Instagram with Peace Boat's Akira Kawasaki, who will be in Nagasaki for the Peace Memorial Ceremony, and has been working with Hibakusha to make sure their voices are heard on this important anniversary, despite all the limitations of the COVID-19 pandemic. They will discuss why it's so important to keep challenging these false narratives, and how world leaders can truly honour the lives lost and the survivors of Nagasaki and Hiroshima 75 years later. and embedded below once it starts.

 

"Do we really need nuclear weapons? Remembering Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the time of COVID-19" - 11 AM CEST

The International Committee of the Red Cross invites you to an online live event broadcasted from the city of Nagasaki, at 11 am (Central European Time) on 9 August 2020, where you will be able to hear the voices of hibakusha (survivors of the 1945 bombings) and an in-depth discussion about the challenges of a nuclear weapons free future between Vice-President of ICRC Gilles Carbonnier, UN USG and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu, ICAN's Beatrice Fihn and former UN Secretary-GeneralMr. Ban Ki-moon.

 

 

Hiroshima - August 6

TPNW Ratification Event on the Occasion of the 75th Anniversary of the Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima - 09:30 EDT

To mark the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) convenes this virtual event to afford to states depositing of instruments of ratification for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons on this day an opportunity to make statements on this important occasion. The event will be streamed on ICAN's Facebook page and embedded below once it starts.

Live Conversation with Koko Kondo - 15:00 JST

Koko Kondo was only eight months old when her city was destroyed by the bomb dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. The bombing had profound implications over the course of her life and Koko has spent decades fighting for the total elimination of nuclear weapons. On the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima, Koko joins us for a live conversation about her experiences and her hopes for the TPNW.

 

 

Hiroshima-ICAN Academy Open Webinar

The Hiroshima — ICAN Academy , a collaboration between Hiroshima Prefecture and ICAN, will be broadcasting the final webinar on YouTube. It will feature Governor Yuzaki Hidehiko of Hiroshima, Beatrice Fihn of ICAN, Ambassador Alexander Kmentt of Austria and UN High Rep for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu.
